Heinrich WEBER

Немецкий математик. В 1860—1866 годах учился в университетах Гейдельберга,
Лейпцига и Кёнигсберга. В 1870—1873 годах — профессор Цюрихского
политехникума, в 1873—1883 годах — Кёнигсбергского, в
1892—1894 годах — Гёттингенского, в 1895—1913 годах —
Страсбургского университетов. Преподавал также в университетах Гейдельберга и Марбурга.
Основные работы относятся к теории алгебраических чисел, теории алгебраических функций,
теории абелевых функций, алгебраической геометрии, уравнениям математической физики. Именем
Вебера названо линейное дифференциальное уравнение 2‑го порядка (1869), представляющее
частный случай вырожденного гипергеометрического уравнения. Решения уравнения Вебера являются
функциями параболического цилиндра (функции Вебера—Эрмита). Переработал лекции по
математической физике Г. Ф. Б. Римана и издал их под названием
„Дифференциальные уравнения математической физики“ (1900—1901).
Последующие издания выходили в переработке Ф. Франка и Р. Мизеса. Совместно с
Й. Вельштейном издал (1903—1907) „Энциклопедию элементарной математики“,
во втором томе которой предложена интерпретация идей геометрии Лобачевского.

Немецкий математик. Окончил Страсбургский университет (1894). В 1895—1897 годах
и с 1904 года работал там же, в 1898—1903 годах — профессор
университета в Гисене.
Основные работы посвящены теории римановых поверхностей, арифметической теории алгебраических
функций, теории функций. Совместно с Г. Вебером издал (1903—1907) „Энциклопедию
элементарной математики“, во 2‑м томе которой предложена интерпретация идей
геометрии Лобачевского.

Каган популяризировал наследие Н. И. Лобачевского.
В „Основаниях геометрии“ (т. 1—2, Одесса, 1905—1907)
дал аксиоматику евклидова пространства с подробным анализом непротиворечивости
и независимости аксиом. Создал теорию так называемых субпроективных пространств,
представляющих собой широкое обобщение пространства Лобачевского. Государственная
премия СССР (1943).
Главный редактор (1902—1917) журнала „Вестник Опытной Физики и Элементарной
Математики“.

Второй томъ Энциклопедiи Элементарной Математики Вебера и Вельштейна отличается своею оригинальностью. Въ немъ читатель не найдетъ полнаго изложенiя всего богатаго матерiала элементарной геометрiи. Авторъ этого тома, профессоръ Вельштейнъ, ограничился лишь тѣмъ матерiаломъ, который ему показался полезнымъ въ примѣненiи къ механикѣ и физикѣ, а также тѣмъ матерiаломъ, который сохраняетъ свое значенiе въ высшей математикѣ. Въ ограниченной такимъ образомъ области элементарной геометрiи авторъ старался достигнуть возможнаго углубленiя и оживленiя матерiала.
Первая книга II тома Энциклопедiи посвящена критическому изслѣдованiю основъ геометрiи. Здѣсь затрагиваются вопросы, лежащiе на рубежѣ между математикой и философiей, вопросы, относительно которыхъ не достигнуто еще соглашенiя. Авторъ указываетъ во многихъ случаяхъ, когда мнѣнiя по какому-нибудь вопросу значительно расходятся, различныя точки зрѣнiя.
Особый интересъ представляетъ въ книгѣ г. Вельштейна своеобразное изложенiе неевклидовой геометрiи, а также изложенiе проективной геометрiи. Читатель найдетъ въ этой книгѣ и весьма цѣнныя указанiя на литературу, относящуюся къ основамъ геометрiи.
Переведена книга на русскiй языкъ прекрасно. Г. Каганъ сдѣлалъ въ ней отъ себя нѣкоторыя весьма цѣнныя примѣчанiя, а также дополнилъ книгу двумя прекрасными статьями: о безконечно удаленныхъ элементахъ и объ измѣненiи площадей. Книга издана прекрасно.

Переводъ на русскiй языкъ этого авторитетнаго и сравнительно элементарно изложеннаго сочиненiя по „Основанiямъ геометрiи“ долженъ быть отнесенъ къ области значительнѣйшихъ явленiй математической литературы послѣднихъ лѣтъ… Сочиненiе Wellstein'а, главнымъ образомъ, слѣдуетъ рекомендовать преподавателямъ геометрiи, которые изъ него получатъ вполнѣ ясное представленiе о совершенно новыхъ глубокихъ идеяхъ революцiонировавшихъ классическую геометрiю, и вмѣстѣ съ тѣмъ найдутъ также и полезныя указанiя педагогическаго характера. Разумѣется, замѣнить элементарный учебникъ эта книга не можетъ и не имѣетъ въ виду.
